AVON PARK, FL — Car loads of interested families and individuals poured into the two-bedroom residence just across from Lake Tulane Thursday morning to get a glimpse of what could be their future home.

A three-year-long project of the Avon Park Housing Authority has come to an end and a new beginning will bring brighter days for families who have fallen on difficult times.

The Hope for the Homeless project has transformed 16 public housing family units into a complex that will serve as temporary homes for families who have been struck by homelessness.

NEW YORK — An annual survey of homelessness in New York City has found a 23 percent increase in the number of people living on the streets.

The city’s Department of Homeless Services says volunteers counted an estimated 3,262 homeless people living on the streets on January 30. There were 2,648 counted in 2011.

This is Andy Anderson with his very sweet dog Coco. Andy is 37 years old and lives at Tent City 3, which is currently at St. Mark’s in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. One night we went out for a pizza and beer and we got talking. Andy has a remarkable life-story, even though he is considerably younger than I am, it feels like he has lived three lives to my one. Andy is comfortable sharing his thoughts and feelings; his voice has a mixture of seriousness and regret that is softened with some sort of acceptance, often finished with a smile or small laugh. He will tell you that his father was an alcoholic, that his dad beat him and his mom repeatedly, early on he was hit so often with a butter knife that he needed speech therapy, that growing up he found that he was good at football, was given a 4-year full-ride scholarship at Wake Forest, that after three years while injured was cut because of grades, even though everyone knew that he wasn’t going to class while he was healthy and playing the first three years, from there he joined the Marines, after basic training went to sniper school, was so good at it that just two days later was sent to Iraq as part of a Bravo Team, 4 snipers and 4 scouts whose job was to protect the Ranger and Seal units, he killed 16 people on the top-hit list, saw too many ugly things, innocent people being killed just because everyone was stressed and jumpy, others making poor decisions in the moment, all of which give Andy night-terrors, which are nightmares you think you wake up from but you are still dreaming. Andy ended up taking two tours to Iraq, one to Afghanistan and one to Bosnia. There is a lot more in Andy’s life, including a divorce and kids, and dealing with bi-polar medications, and being homeless. Honest truth is, I don’t know how he does it, how he keeps pushing forward. Andy is a reminder to me how each person, no matter where they live, what they are doing, has a meaningful life under way. I am so glad to have met Andy and so very glad to be one of his friends.
